The stuff they sell there was rarely any better cost/unit than any other retail outlets, but you could get what you needed for right now for cheaper. Think of one smaller toilet paper roll for a dollar instead of a 4 pack of larger rolls for $5. You'll get way less TP/$ with Dollar Tree, but when you only got $20 in your bank account it'll let you wipe your butt this week and still get enough food.

The people whom shopped at the dollar tree frequently are gonna get hurt quite bad if their wages don't also rise to compensate.

I shopped there frequently when I was dirt poor (part time minimum wage worker). It really does fill a gap that’s much needed for low income folks. I was able to get basics without draining my checking account. I think my whole kitchen was decked out with dollar store merchandise because I was starting from nothing (had moved across the country shortly before).

The problem is, they're a stopgap best used in specific situations that's now pricing themselves out of that situation.

Dollar Tree said the reason for raising its prices to $1.25 was not due to “short-term or transitory market conditions” and said the price increases were permanent. The higher prices will also allow the company to cope with high merchandise cost increases as well as higher operating costs, such as wages, it said.

Dollar twenty-five tree just doesn't have the same ring to it... I suppose that's inflation for ya.
