My wife had a craving for soup yesterday and wanted to go to Olive Garden for their pasta fagioli. I didn't really feel like going out and paying for Olive Garden to be delivered doesn't sit well with me. I had made a large batch of chicken bone broth a while back, and having most of the other ingredients on hand, I just decided to make pasta fagioli myself. It's not a complicated recipe at all, but because it was so simple I wasn't paying attention and carelessly misread the ingredients. Instead of 1 cup of pasta, I added 1 lb (dry) of pasta.

It still tasted amazing, but in the end it was closer to hamburger helper than soup since the pasta absorbed all the broth, lol.

That's a good kind of mistake in my books. Glad it turned out well!

I made plov last night for the family. My wife comes from a Russian family and it was a regular dish for them and I learned to make it a few years ago. This time I did all the ingredients by memory/taste and added a beef boulion cube to the hot water added for the rice. My only real mistake was in searing the beef when I crowded the pan and drastically reduced the heat of the oil - cooking out a lot of moisture from the meat. Other than that, the braise worked well and the overall flavour of the dish when it finished was great.

Huge bonus that our 17mo kid also loved the dish.

I made bagels for the first time. In some ways (dough consistency and flavor), it was easier than I thought and in some ways (shaping), more difficult. I need to figure out how to get them so that they don't want to fall apart where I join the two ends of the dough together, or maybe try the method where you just create a ball and then work a hole in the middle of it. Also need to get a better crisp on the outside, but the dough itself was nice and chewy.

I am on my honeymoon in Hawaii from the southern US, and I'm taking the opportunity to eat good seafood. This is actually a bit of a moral quandary for me: I generally think it's not ethical to eat animals in excess (I eat chicken 1 day a week on average), but the seafood here is so plentiful and so dang good. I've had poke or sushi for lunch just about every day for the last 10 days. It's amazing. I have always loved seafood, but never ate it at home because I know it isn't fresh, or sustainably caught, (as well as the ethical reasons stated earlier), but now that I am somewhere with an abundance of ahi tuna I have been eating it at just about every opportunity. So I couldn't be happier, or more ethically confused. Which is good, I guess?
