What's the Difference between... heirloom, beefsteak, plum, grape, cherry, and cocktail tomatoes?

    Honestly, how difficult they are to grow. In both Michigan and Florida, my experience was that heirlooms selected for the local climate did much better than hybrids.

    That may have been influenced by the fact that commercial nurseries and household garden suppliers like Home Depot and Lowe's mainly sell hybrids plus whatever insects and diseases are endemic in the area.

    Starting your own heirloom plants from seed is the best way around this, with the extra benefit that you can save the seeds for the next year.
