Yeah, that's abstract games for you. The theme's either really surface level or not there at all. Agricola and Terraforming Mars are great game too.
This looks cool! I'll keep it in mind as an Xmas present for my partner. If you like 2 player "competitive" games, we also play Jaipur a lot.
Yes! Jaipur is fantastic. Two of my other favorite two-player games are Hive and Quarto.
