As someone who has never played MtG before, but was interested in CCGs such as Hearthstone and Gwent (which I know are very different), what would be a good place to start? Online or physical? And...

Unrelated, but is your name a reference to Cory Doctorow's story The Man Who Sold The Moon?

I initially read it when you posted, and then over the course of the last few days came back to it when I wanted to refresh my memory because there is so much info in it for a complete Magic newbie. Really appreciate you posting it - wish Tildes had a save button for when I'll inevitably need it next.

@Freelunch wrote you a very detailed comment that's full of great info, but if you just want to try out MTG and get a general feel for the game, I'd highly suggest trying out one of the "Duels of the Planeswalkers" video games. That way you don't need to buy any cards, they have a pretty good tutorial and interface, you can play single-player, etc.
I assumed they'd be on sale as part of the current Steam sale, but it looks like there's no discount on them, which is unfortunate. They're not particularly expensive though, here's a link to the 2014 version (there's a 2015 one as well but it has bad reviews, I haven't looked to see why): https://store.steampowered.com/app/213850/Magic_2014__Duels_of_the_Planeswalkers/
Thank you for the recommendation, I'll make sure to give the game a try! Reading a little more about Magic, I came across Duels being mentioned a few times, so I guess I'll start with that.

I play at the kitchen table with the occasional pre-release day thrown in. I only play EDH. I'm excited for new planeswalkers for my Axtra deck and starting a dragon deck based on Sarkhan,...
