I finally reached diamond rank in Overwatch since Season 1 (of OW1)
Just sharing since it is a proud moment for me. I've been playing since season 1. I've been grinding and grinding and grinding. I finally hit Diamond 5 in Competitive Mystery Heroes (which I think is the only true, real game mode that's any fun these days). I think I can finally quit now. Thank you.
Congratulations !
I will say, I’ve never understood the following sentiment:
How much effort did it take to achieve diamond rank?
Oh yeah, thanks! But you can a answer too if you want!
Since Season 1 which is like 2016… obviously some people are just naturally good and they place diamond like it’s nothing. But for me I’d bounce around in ELO hell forever bronze > silver > gold maybe platinum. The idea that I was always just about but couldn’t drove me crazy. So it’s a huge release for me, mentally.
You spend years grinding, stuck in ELO hell trying to hit a rank that you know you’re capable of. And then the game devs know how to keep you on the leash, whether it’s lowering your rank at the beginning of every season (so you grind up to where you were the previous season), or making you grind extra hard at the cusp of each next tier. Then there’s the bad matchups, bad match making and all that.
So you think you could be a plat, but you’re stuck in silver and every once in awhile you hit gold. And that keeps you frustrated and coming back for more.
So hitting diamond (when I’ve only ever barely been plat) is huge for me. And also means I don’t want to play again because I know I’ll drop again and I want to end on a high note. :)
Diamond in Mystery Heroes is like Grandmaster in regular ranked. I have never had much luck with that gamemode, can't imagine getting anywhere near Diamond! Great job!
Thanks! Although it's hard to know how it all translates. So much goes into regular comp that is just thrown away in Mystery.
For what it's worth I'm a support main in regular and I haven't gone above Plat 2. In OW1 I was a tank main and peaked 23xx. I just know it's more fun in mystery because there's less complaining. It's like quick play but poo poos on leavers.
That's a great achievement, especially when It felt like the matchmaking system does everything to trap you in a certain ranking. And curious because Mystery Heros becomes the go-to mode when meta and balance has gone to hell. Wish you luck in your next hurdle.
Had my own stint with ranked Overwatch but as a tank main, the jump to 5v5 did not sit well with me.
Thanks. I felt like I was in ELO hell forever and, as you say, Mystery took all the meta out of the equation and made it more fun and less toxic because, hey, rngsus.
