Wynncraft

Recently I picked up Wynncraft again, and it's sad it's a minecraft server because at times the quality can feel like an actual standalone game during some of the better quests.

I remember playing on this server a few years ago. It's really impressive how much some servers (especially the minigame-oriented ones) have been able to push this game.

Wasn't an RPG sever, but I used to play Minecraft back in the day. RIP Etriacraft, you will never be forgotten...

I tried playing it several months ago. It was impressive how much they were able to do with the limitations of spigot and vanilla mc clients - but it was still painfully apparent how much of it was workaround hacks. Still kind of fun, but i got bored after a little while.

One of the things that I really disliked right off the bat as someone coming from mostly vanilla servers was that I was not able to build. The world was static. It was beautiful visually, and the npc interactions were clever, but it definitely was off-putting to be in a sandbox voxel game where creativity is king - and not being able to be creative.

The thing that ultimately led to me not continuing to play after getting to the forest area was that it just felt like a singleplayer game that happened to have other people around. Maybe that's what WoW does and it works, but to me it was... weird.

What would be nice is if something like wynncraft used a modpack with mods the team there created themselves. It would allow so much more engaging gameplay and much better immersion - but I suspect the time and energy investment in doing that would not be worth it when they can make plenty of money off of their current setup - especially when microsoft/mojang are going in a completely different direction than Forge. :/
