I don’t know what is going on with the game, but the layout of the letters did not match the qwerty keyboard despite going into the settings and confirming that it was set appropriately.
I had something like the following for the top row (parentheses meant to show two inputs on one button).
Q W E (RS) U (Z[) V I O P
Even if I find the correct letters on this layout, it seems to error and prevent me from continuing to fire at the enemy.
After further testing, it seems like the keys do what my fingers expect them to do and actually work as qwerty. I don't understand what the overlay is meant to be showing if not the correct keys, and I definitely don't understand the visuals of the combo keys. If it is an attempt to get you to type through feel only, just lose the labels entirely rather than putting the wrong ones on.
