Anyone that's played any of the more recent ones think this will be a good thing, or is it likely to be disappointing?

I haven't played anything more recent than that, but it does look like reviews haven't been as consistently good since that era.
None of the Telltale games I’ve played have really done anything for me. As a huge fan of old LucasArts adventures I figured I was square in the target audience for these... but I just don’t like...

I like Stranger Things but I’m not holding my breath for anything different here, unfortunately.
Have you played any of The Book of Unwritten Tales series? Those are really good, modern point-and-click adventure games that I enjoyed quite a bit. The second one is quite a bit higher quality...

One modern adventure game I enjoyed was The Cave, it came out a few years ago from Ron Gilbert (creator of Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island). Greatly creative and funny game with gorgeous artwork. Since we’re swapping game recommendations, haha.

It's likely to be disappointing, however there's some interesting drama surrounding Telltale. They struck success with The Walking Dead and instead of innovating on a genre they helped define/invigorate. They over extended themselves by making too many games. This supposedly lead to quite a lot of tension and disagreement within the studio which has only recently potentially been sorted out.
This all means that the games they're making are likely to be underwhelming due to poor writing, an aging engine, and repetitive game mechanics. However they do seem to be at another crossroads and if they make the right choice we might see them make something great. I hope that happens, they're one of the last people I would've given a Stranger Things license to, but I hope they do well.
I played both of the Batman ones and they're ok. They're games for non-gamers. I would probably try the Stranger Things one, but unlikely at full price.

There was an article a few months back that made it sound like the company's been a bit of a mess internally for a while: https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/20/17130056/telltale-games-developer-layoffs-toxic-video-game-industry
