    I've seen a lot of people blaming Nintendo for going after fans and their work, but really the blame should be fully on copyright laws. They are basically forced to go after any use of their IP or else a judge might rule that they haven't been protecting it well enough should any dispute happen.

      I've heard this is the case with US trademark law, but I wasn't aware that it also applied to copyright law. I thought that rights holders of registered copyright could always go after infringement regardless. I also don't know where I could look to find out which is true.
