Supernatural mystery itself is a genre that is quite rare, and all but completely dominated by darker existential horror works like that of HP Lovecraft. Folklore is a lighter kind of supernatural-existential mystery, and as such is almost a new genre unto itself.

Definitely do. I don't think you have to worry a great deal about not getting through it. While the game does have its difficulty spikes, they are really not that bad. Also, the game has pretty deep mechanics that allow you to compensate for any lack of reflex or skill with tactical planning. As long as you stop to think about what you might be doing wrong whenever you find yourself stuck, you will definitely come up with some new strategy to try.

The game will eventually require you to switch to the other character, and you will be forced to play through all the same realms as that one. The two characters have some subtle differences to how they fight, though, and some of the enemies you encounter will be different, so while it can feel a bit repetitive, there's enough of a difference to not make it feel completely pointless. I generally recommend playing as far as you can with one character before switching to the other one, it makes the game feel a bit less repetitive since you don't have to complete each realm twice before you can move on to and discover the next one.

While I had a manual with my copy, I used it very little. The game sort of has its manual built in, and you learn about all the mechanics either in the game's tutorial or by talking to NPCs and paying attention to what they tell you.

Hope you stick with it. I think you will find it to be a wonderful journey.

I remember downloading the demo for this when I first got my PS3, since there wasn't really any games out for it other than Resistance at the time. I liked the style but never ended up buying it.

I recommend taking a closer look at it again if you can. Like I said, actually getting a copy these days can be difficult, and while it's definitely what I recommend, there are alternatives. Emulation is possible these days, or you could simply watch through a let's play if you like the aesthetics but don't feel like the gameplay mechanics seem interested enough to dive into. Cryaotic's playthrough is both relaxing and entertaining, and mostly does the game justice.
