Spoilers in the link, by the way.
I finally got around to playing Photopia (and I do suggest playing it if you have any interest in IF at all, it's a short piece), and I don't know if it was my expectations from hanging out in IF spaces and hearing it mentioned or what, but I felt basically nothing and saw little other than a tightly constructed decent little story.
This piece does a great job summarizing and refuting the common responses to Photopia, making a coherent whole out of points that are somewhat self-evident separately but seemingly are often lost in other notable interpretations. Personally, I felt more reading this person talk about Photopia than I did going through the game itself.
It made me wish there was writing this confident and well put together on all games. Not that this person is some Earth-shattering critic, but they do stand out vs others who write on games.
