I kind of liked Apex Legends, but this leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Titanfall, despite it's mediocre sales, was a genuinely good series and to see EA already whipping Respawn into form by having them retrofit it into a Battle Royale is both worrisome and angering. I hope Respawn will be able to deliver on a sensible monetisation scheme, but if EA has this much pressure on them Apex Legends' future does not look bright.

I wasn't hugely into the TF series, but Apex is a solid addition to the BR genre. The complete lack of advertising makes me think EA isn't optimistic though, and the 'pressure' can't really be there as a result (even if everyone does actually want it to succeed).

I just got done playing it and I'll likely return to it a couple more times. I think the lack of marketing, per the article, was on Respawn's request. Since it figured it had no good way to market it without the negative feedback of it being the result of Titanfall 3's cancellation.

And I disagree with your last statement, if anything EA not being optimistic will make them want to nickel and dime it more to recoup their investment as much as possible. If they had no interest in meddling in it they likely wouldn't have in the first place, if they pressure the company to completely abandon the original blueprint and change the game then they're looking to make money out of it no matter what.

Apex was Respawn's idea, not EA's, and that's straight from the mouth of an executive producer at Respawn. This is the game they wanted to make, and it's obvious way too much effort went into it to dispel any belief that it's nothing but a sloppy, rushed battle royale game with a Titanfall skin.

I get that EA isn't the best company, but a lot of the skepticism and outrage tossed its way is completely over the top. Apex Legends had a stellar launch and is thus far very deserving of the recognition its gotten, EA involved or not.

That's a great interview, and it puts some doubts I have to rest. I hope they continue to have a good amount of creative and monetary freedom over their game. The comparison to Rainbow Six Siege...

The comparison to Rainbow Six Siege is also interesting: I've barely played that game but everybody I hear about it sings it's praises, so it's definitely an interesting model for a team-based game.

Titanfall is probably a top 5 of all time shooter for me, and I still hope dearly for a third installment, but I gotta say, Apex Legends really caught me by surprise in a good way. I'm not the biggest fan of the battle royale genre, but Apex got a lot right that others have gotten wrong. Combine that with the gameplay and polish that's to be expected from a Respawn game, I am not complaining at all that this is what we got instead of Titanfall 3.
