It's an interesting review, but I think that the underlying isolation has been largely removed. The existence of the Anomaly where you regularly see other people talking and buying things makes me feel more like it's an extensively instanced MMO as opposed to a truly isolated experience. The more populated spacestations feel more like towns than lonely truck stops. I'd be very interested in hearing an updated review given the changes in the last three years of development.
Additionally, the expansive base building with an unlimited number of bases, the recent expansion of long-term resource gathering from industry you research and develop and ability to teleport back to both all of your bases and any space station you've visited makes together for a much less restless experience. The plot still guides you onward to the center, but the mechanics give you reasons to linger.
