It's a pretty good F2P model in my opinion. All micro transactions are cosmetic upgrades. It does have randomised loot boxes you can buy but I understand everything in them you can also buy in the shop directly. I've personally bought about $20 worth of skins and pets and crap as a donation as I figure I've played a hundred hours of the game, I probably owe them something.
Cool. I took a look at Diablo but it's very expensive in my region. Do you think there's a way/mode in which a casual like me could enjoy this game? I installed it on my computer once but the idea...

I installed it on my computer once but the idea of clicking my mouse for fun is not super-appealing for me (I already do this all day long). So PS4 it is.
Honestly I didn't really get in to Diablo because it felt like I could basically just hold attack to win most of the time but my big attacks didn't feel like they did enough damage to bosses....

Another option would be Torchlight 2 which I think could already be on the PS4. (I know it's dropping on the Switch soon)
That's a bit more simple than POE but it does feel like your skills are worth something. I'm probably going to pick it up for the second time when it comes out on Switch so I can play some ARPG on the bus.
As someone who used to play quite a bit of PoE, and holds it in higher regard than Diablo, I'm a little surprised at this particular criticism. When I played years ago, in PoE you'd build around a...

As someone who used to play quite a bit of PoE, and holds it in higher regard than Diablo, I'm a little surprised at this particular criticism. When I played years ago, in PoE you'd build around a single 6-link attack skill to maximize its damage and carnage; the rest of your skills would be auras and movement abilities. Has this changed a lot?
Generally your attacks feel solid in PoE whereas in Diablo I didn't feel powerful I guess? There WAS no carnage. I didn't ever make it to end game play before I lost interest but it really didn't...

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, I can agree with that. In PoE, your one stacked attack is going to clear the entire screen in a heartbeat. Part of the difference in D3, though, is just that...

Part of the difference in D3, though, is just that difficulty in that game is so adjustable. You'll seldom be clearing screens the way you can in PoE because if you can, then you'd probably crank the difficulty further up for rewards. Not as easy to do in PoE (without opening up that currency tab, lol).

There's a really important game-impacting buy you can make, and that's item storage tabs. I'm not saying it's a bad model, but there's an initial investment outside of cosmetics here. Good item tabs runs about $40 when they're on sale (and tabs are on sale every three weeks). Pretty worth for the sizable chunk I've played, and I didn't pick them up until after I knew I liked the game.
Honestly, inventory management is one of the things I enjoy most about the game.

I tried this game for a bit. Seemed cool, but a bit too complex for me at the time. How "free" is it nowadays? I may download it on the PS4.

So the boxes only contain visual stuff?
Yeah, you can get items to override your armour/weapon/skill graphics to look fancy but they don't affect your in-game stats.

That is a good point actually.. My first playthrough was without premium tabs but since I've bought them I couldn't go back!
