I felt like this is what they'd've made Doom – the very first game in the series – if they had the technology. From the glimpses of the gameplay, I got that old school feeling that wasn't present in the previous "new" Doom. Some of the enemies appeared surprisingly-cartoonish for what was previously portrayed, which links me to the first game and its (relatively) poor graphics.
Looking forward to the development of the story. I agree with your plot-wise caution, and I hope they keep the gameplay as simple-while-entertaining as they did for the reboot – while still telling a bigger story... but not too big.
Hopefully story won't get in the way of gameplay, for some reason I'm getting Halo vibes from this trailer.

I really enjoyed Doom 2016, so I'm looking forward to Eternal!
Heh.
