One of the things I love about Trackmania is that it's really easy to get into but also very hard to master. There are a lot of specific techniques and skills that go into higher-level play, but the game is still thoroughly enjoyable even for those not wanting to put forth that level of effort. For anyone who does, however, this video does a good job of introducing some of those concepts and techniques.

This is the best news! Hooray! Trackmania is legitimately a source of joy for me, which isn't something I say about most of the games that I play, so I'm absolutely thrilled that you and your friends are getting into it. Hopefully you find in it the same joy that I do!
And yeah, I've had my fair share of "wait, what time is it?!" nights. For me, the multiplayer matches have that "just one more..." pull, especially because they're so short. It's easy to commit to another 5 minutes! And another 5. And another 5. Aaaaand now it's 5 AM.
Also, I love that you're toying with the map editor! I've never actually made one myself, so you're already in deeper than I am! Nice video as well! If you find yourself really getting into mapping and want to share your creations with the community, ManiaExchange is the de facto home for custom maps.

Yeah, even in racing lobbies the people tend to be unilaterally nice. Even when things are really competitive with players posting times milliseconds apart and jockeying for first, they are more likely to compliment people beating their times than get mad at them. There's nothing like seeing someone win a hard-fought battle for first map in a lobby and then watching the chat get flooded with celebrations and "nt" (nice time) when the round is over. I'm playing on controller on my TV, so I can't chat, and it feels a little empty when I can't join in the celebrations.
There's also a personally defining story here for me, relative to player conduct. The only time I've seen someone who was being openly hostile on Trackmania was someone who wasn't even racing and was just posting homophobic stuff in chat. I'm gay and didn't feel like getting into it with him but also didn't want to let him go unchecked, so I simply input a command to change my name to appear in rainbow in the game and said something like "oh, I must have forgotten to hang up my pride flag -- sorry about that!". It got some lols from other people in the lobby, and the guy ended up getting kicked shortly thereafter, but I stuck with it and have had my TM username include a rainbow ever since. I'm actually disappointed in the current Trackmania only because it doesn't let you have color in your username. You can apparently manually change it via a command for a particular lobby (like I did in response to that one guy), but there's no option for an account-wide setting. I'm hoping that gets patched in -- not just for me but for everyone else, since a lot of teams and high-level players stylize their names using nice color schemes and gradients as well.
I haven't tried it myself, and from what I've seen of people talking about it doesn't necessarily work for every server, but you'd want to type /setname [formattedname] in the chat, with the...
I haven't tried it myself, and from what I've seen of people talking about it doesn't necessarily work for every server, but you'd want to type /setname [formattedname] in the chat, with the formatted name being based on the rules here. You can apply colors on a per-character basis, and a lot of people use gradients, which there's a handy tool for here.
Yeah, I think the server admins have to toggle it on (either that, or the command has changed for the new game). I'm just planning to wait, as I'm assuming they'll patch in a way to do it at some...
