Been playing the closed alpha, and I can easily say this article is absolutely spot-on. It's a modern-day Left 4 Dead, with all the ups and downs that come with that. The gameplay feels good despite zombies still slowing you on hit - something I've always hated - and the card system genuinely feels useful and interesting. I just hope they don't use the cards as an excuse for loot boxes.

Also agree with the author on pacing as well, except for one point: Back 4 Blood's pacing doesn't feel as fast as L4D, it feels faster. It feels like there are virtually no breaks in the action whatsoever barring the safe rooms themselves, while L4D tended to at least be quieter when no hordes were being attracted. This results in very hectic games where you can't stop moving and it's hard to pay attention to anything but fighting, which is really a shame.

Still, the game's very fun overall, and I'm looking forwards to release!

My first playthrough of L4D was with 2 friends and future wife was one of my top 5 gaming experiences. It was an immersive, cinematic experience, because we were taking it slow and careful, rather than trying to gun through it as fast as possible.

I wish more multiplayer games were able to capture that feeling, while still having satisfying combat mechanics.

First playthrough of Borderlands had a similar feel, but not quite as satisfying once everything started feeling samey.

L4D2 versus mode was one of the best LAN party gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Good to see someone picking up where Valve left off.

Dying over and over again in them while trying to figure out what you need to do is incredibly frustrating, but it also makes victory all the sweeter once you finally manage to figure it out and beat them. :)
