I'll preface by saying I've been a Haidt skeptic for a while. He's been on a "campus PC is out of control" beat for a while in most of his popular publications in the Atlantic and stuff which turned me off on him. His actual work seems far more sophisticated however. I still don't really buy his conclusions in this video about initiation rites, it seems pretty eurocentric and his conclusions are overgeneralized.
But I did find the intro-point about rates of mental health issues and the effects of online bullying and social exclusion among girls starting in 2012 to be pretty striking and persuasive. I am pretty sure I'm going to be trying to keep my kids off social media until they're way older than I initially expected at this point.
