France may have a constitutional right to abortion but it is only up to 14 weeks. https://www.npr.org/2024/03/04/1235217454/france-abortion-rights-constitution#

France's time limit on elective abortion is set at 14 weeks — a shorter timeframe than the proposed 15-week nationwide ban that has caused an uproar in the United States.

True but it being a protected right, covered/reimbursed by insurance up to that point eliminates a lot of barriers that make lower limits such a problem in the US. Later abortions are allowed for the physical or mental health of the pregnant person or severe incurable disease of the fetus.

Essentially the reasons most later term abortions happen are covered by the amendment (access and cost) or the exception (medical or mental injury, serious fetal medical issues, to save the life). Would I argue in principle that it should be without restriction? Yes. But is it way different to have a nationwide ban up to 15 weeks than a constitutional right up to 14? Also yes.

      Per wiki:

Abortion in France is legal upon request until 14 weeks after conception (16 weeks after the pregnant woman's last menstrual period). Abortions at later stages of pregnancy up until birth are allowed if two physicians certify that the abortion will be done to prevent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman; a risk to the life of the pregnant woman; or that the child will suffer from a particularly severe illness recognized as incurable.

While this time limit is less than it could be, it's one of the longer ones in Europe. More importantly, guaranteeing it up to 14 weeks is very different from banning it after 15 weeks. There are absolutely huge swaths of the US where abortion is already straight-up illegal.

French lawmakers on Monday overwhelmingly approved a bill that will enshrine a woman’s right to an abortion in France’s constitution, a historic move designed to prevent the kind of rollback of abortion rights seen in the United States in recent years.

In an exceptional joint session of parliament convened at the Palace of Versailles, the bill was approved in a 780-72 vote. Abortion enjoys wide support in France across most of the political spectrum, and has been legal since 1975.

The vote makes France the first country to have a constitutional right to abortion since the former Yugoslavia inscribed it in its 1974 constitution. Serbia’s 2006 constitution carries on that spirit, stating that “everyone has the right to decide on childbirth.”
