As an occupational (hand) therapist, I really enjoyed this video. Firstly, it's nice to see a massage therapist with such intricate knowledge of the anatomy of the hand; most massage therapists I've had never seemed to focus on anatomy. Knowing the anatomy can really help with zeroing in on problem muscles and structures. Second, painting the bones, musculature, and nerve is a great visual aid to understanding what's happening. I wish I had seen this in school.

In my clinic, what I find to be the most effective way to treat patients is through preventing compression at the wrist (via excessive keyboard/mouse use), and by reducing the amount of repetitive gripping you do daily (i.e. tasks that require repetitive gripping/pinching) since the median nerve travels in the same carpal tunnel as the flexor muscles that close your fingers. A wrist orthosis (brace) is also indicated for patients, since a lot of people don't realize they sleep with their wrists bent, which compresses the nerve even more.

The visualization was really interesting and actually helped me understand a bit about the pain/fatigue I feel. I'm in front of a computer all day, and over the years have learned the signs on when I need to switch hands for my mouse, wear my brace or just ease up a bit. It's really cool to see the actual connections though.

Yeah, the anatomy was correct, but I ended up closing the video upon hearing about her alternative treatments. Do you wear wrist braces to sleep at night and have wrist pads for your keyboard/mouse? If you find yourself still having issues, I recommend looking into alternative ergonomic mice. There's a mouse that puts your hand in a more neutral position. I think it was called a shark mouse.

I have wrist braces, but don't generally wear them to sleep. I have wrist pads for both my mouse and keyboard, and as long as I keep my posture, find that 8-10 hours of work each day is fine. It's using my hands in my off hours that seem to give me the most trouble, and really it's crocheting. I usually end up wearing my brace for a week or so after finishing up a blanket.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into the shark mouse :)

This is pretty cool. She draws out the anatomy very well and it provides a good base to understand what's going on. Unfortunatly she didn't actually explain what goes wrong in carpal tunnel syndrome or really use her drawn aid in any useful way which was extremely disappointing. Also advocating essential oils as a treatment method is also sad to see.

Exactly what I thought. The drawing really is well done but in the end it doesn't tell anything about what happens when a carpal tunnel syndrome happens.
