    Tick-borne diseases aren't extinction-level pandemics, since they're generally not transmissible person-to-person, but they are sources of additional human morbidity and mortality that strain already taxed health systems and societies. The story does mention the disease impact on animal agriculture in passing, as well as the newly-identified alpha-galactose intolerance syndrome (life-threatening immune response to red meat) from lone star tick bites.
