I tried free solo (rock climbing with no ropes) with Alex Honnold. Insane experience!

I mean, free solo is kinda insane. Seems like a lot of needless risk for thrillseeking.

If you haven't see it, you should watch Free Solo (a documentary about one of Alex Honnold's greatest feats). Minor spoilers, but there's a scene where Hannold gets an MRI and discover his amygdala -- the part of the brain responsible for fear -- barely does any work. Here's a more in-depth article.

There is a quantifiable and much higher risk of death and serious injury during free solo v roped climbing.

Whether that risk is acceptable to the individual is up to them, but there is a social cost to bad outcomes, and society should be able to choose to curb the activity or charge you the cost of the risk up front. In some places, search and rescue will send you an invoice for your extraction.

My view, as a thrillseeker myself (backcountry mtb), is that free solo is way over the line.

Honestly, extreme sports are really not much different from addiction, except espn doesn’t have a competitive crack show.

I'm so glad to finally see this collaboration. It's just too bad that YouTube decided to demonetize it. :(

p.s. If you enjoyed this video, also worth checking out is Magnus' collaboration with another of the world's best climbers, Adam Ondra. Playlist
