This historical account needed more attention. Whether the subjects of Ibn Fadlan are technically Vikings or Volga Vikings, the details he is able to share about their daily lives are priceless.

I'm sure you probably know this already, but there is a pretty decent action movie loosely based on the accounts of Ahmad ibn Fadlan called 13th Warrior. It's mostly a fantasy story, so not very historically accurate overall, but it does feature some of the things talked about in Fadlan's accounts that you also covered, like the Norse funeral process.

And I have also posted a few other videos over the years on the related subjects of the Kievan Rus, and Varangian Guard, both personal favorite topics of mine.

p.s. Great video, BTW. It was perfectly understandable even at 2x speed. :)

Yes, the 13th Warrior is itself loosely based on Michael Crichton‘s first novel, The Eaters of the Dead, which is very loosely based on the historical account, which I understand he did not have full access to.

The story has floated around the edges of the popular Zeitgeist for a couple generations and I thought it would be very useful to have better access to the source material.

The Eastern Vikings have one of the most fascinating stories in recorded history, as far as I’m concerned. It’s like The Na-Dené of Alaska who began a journey south a couple thousand years ago and ended up establishing the Navajo nation in Arizona. Just mind-boggling ethnic migrations.

There is so much of this material, with more of it being made available all the time. A friend is offering AI video footage for some of the next subjects. I’m certainly tempted. Collecting the footage for these videos takes the majority of the time.

How would viewers react to AI footage, do you think?

I personally don't have any problems with AI generated images being used as background for videos, and I think as long as you're clear and up-front about the fact you're using AI, it should be fine with most people. However, I would also advise caution when using AI generated images if your intention is historical accuracy, since it's known to create rather biased output, E.g. These two topics [1] [2].

Also, was it you who fixed and added all the tags to this post? If so, thank you. I’m still getting up to speed here.

Yeah, ditto about AI, even as an artist myself. And yep, it was me that made the edits, and no prob, glad to help. BTW, you can see who made what edits to a topic by clicking on the Topic Log in...
