To be fair, this occurs whenever there is a significant sex ratio imbalance, and it's an extremely serious issue for governments because it can lead to significant social unrest and upheaval. Fundamentally at the end of the day, no one wants to live and die alone.

And these examples seem cherry-picked, and—extrapolating from contemporary times—surely a few of the women at the time had similarly absurd personal requirements.

You see this in China where the male:female ratio is 105:100, a consequence of selective childbearing resulting from the One-Child Policy. Such a difference seems small, but in a country of 1.4bn that means tens of millions of excess men. This leads to human trafficking and thriving matchmaking markets. The pressure to own a home and a car have become prerequisite for bachelors to become viable in the dating market (see the "I'd rather cry in a BMW" meme that's come to symbolize China's romantic zeitgeist), one of several drivers for a hot real estate market.

Some things never change, just a tad bit more convenient (ala, tinder, match, forums, chat rooms, radio shows, and VHS tape services pre-internet).

I believe the main difference is that today dating for the sake of dating (as opposed to look for a marriage) is usually acceptable in non-fundamentalist nations.
