TL;DR: conservative Christians in the west are funding anti-LGBT groups in Africa.

It's just modern missionaries. Native populations would be wise to run them out of town.

The US and UN’s religious freedom initiatives are basically wired to support missionaries in missionary activity and come down on activist groups or governments that attempt to curtail or counter it.

This is because the groups that do it are usually doing so in the name of a traditional religion, a traditional Catholic background, Islam, or communism. So the US will always depict it as religious supremacism by the majority group rather than an internal political matter, because the missionaries who lodge the complaints and provide on-the-ground intelligence/reports view any curtailing of their activities as religious suppression.

With the US it’s pretty egregious, Evangelical Christians have basically captured USCIRF. Within the UN it’s a bit more ecumenical, with Christian missionary groups and Islamic countries both collaborating to create boundaries and standards for what constitutes “religion” and “secularism” that privilege their particular fundamentalist perspectives.
