Much as I would like to think that we could all agree on a set of terms and have them stick, I fear that defining one's opponents as adhering to some vague, threatening buzzword would be too...

It is funny to consider, American Republicans are still for a welfare state, even if a smaller or privately administered one. Does that make them 'socialist' too?

That depends entirely on the definition of socialist. So it kind of needs to be agreed upon.
