Ditto for me too in High School. Although for me what destroyed my fascination with her and her philosophy was realizing that, while in the internal logic of her fictional world her philosophy is "rational" and makes sense, in the real world things aren't quite so simplistic or black & white. Government can actually work for the people, people working in government are not all power mad looking to control everyone, not everyone is a superman (or superwoman) capable of total self-sufficiency, not everyone utilizing social assistance is a despicable, lazy, layabout (especially ironic considering Rand herself relied on it later in her life), etc. etc. etc. etc.
