A misunderstanding about the role of informed civic participation in democracy is one factor that allows voters to be easily divided and/or kept away from the polls. If our public education institutions don't teach it, power will continue being ceded to those special interests that know how to manipulate it. This article presents an important case, Cook (A.C.) v. Raimondo, in which students are suing over the public school system's duty to teach a practical civics education. Whether or not a lawsuit is the best way to address this issue, the lawsuit "goes to the heart of the relationship between education and the success of the American experiment."

In addition to this linked article, you can read more about the case here: http://www.cookvraimondo.info/
