Growing up in the Detroit area and moving away, it always surprised me how other places had much more visible and sheltering communities for LGBTQ+ people. Aside from the insular college town I called home, it didn't seem like Michigan had many places where it felt comfortable to be out in public, even though the state has the 7th largest LGBTQ+ population in the country.
I'm delighted that's changing, particularly since the passage of state-level anti-discrimination laws last year. Even the small rural city I'm living in now has had a bloom of LGBTQ+-friendly community spaces.
