Non-affirming model of therapy
Patient: "I think my boss hates me."
Therapist: "I don't believe that your boss hates you. Have you tried thinking that your boss doesn't hate you?"
Affirming model of therapy
Patient: "I think my boss hates me."
Therapist: "That sounds awful. What evidence do you have that your boss hates you?"
In the affirming model the therapist is exploring what's going on with the client, they're not necessarily instantly accepting it as true. In the non-affirming model they're instantly rejecting what the client says. It shuts down exploration.
