We gave up commercial food for our dog sometime ago. It is a long story but she is allergic to wheat and we were using a very expensive wet food for her. That company sold out to J&J unbeknownst to me and a few months thereafter, recalled. Unfortunately, my dog was fed recalled food as after the initial recall they expanded it to previous lots. She did get quite ill. I don't trust any of them anymore.

So with our Vet's help, we make our own 'dog food' which we batch cook once a month and freeze. The peace of mind alone is worth it as my dog is the best dog, really she is the best one ever.

Dogs can exist on vegetarian diets but it must be carefully balanced and the quality of the food high. It is very important these diets assures they get the essential fatty acids their physiology requires.

I feel like the title is misleading. They've determined that there's a problem with some grain-free foods, but show no indication of their ingredients being the actual problem. In fact, they're unsure of the cause but seem to be speculating that it's a taurine deficiency, which would be caused by ingredient exclusion, not inclusion, an issue that could affect any dog food. It could even be an issue of an attempted vegan diet, so dog foods that include meat could be perfectly fine, but there's no mention of this point and we can't verify independently.

It's definitely good to be wary of these foods just in case and to do some research about them, and definitely discuss the issue with a vet who can provide better insight regarding your pet's health, but let's avoid treating the article itself as authoritative.

Give it a read, definitely worth keeping an eye on your dog if you're using this kind of high vegetable content food.
