I started reading thinking having two surnames must be pretty weird, because in my head for some reason I translated it as "three names". Only later I realized that the article is somewhat about me, because I too have two surnames. In my culture we have two surnames as well, sometimes more if the parents feel like it, and they follow the same logic. It never occurred to me that my culture might be the odd one elsewhere.
