    I've also seen May 8 suggested - solely on the basis that saying "may eight" sounds like "maaate". Coincidentally (or not?), this is close to the date that the federal Australian Parliament was first opened, on 9th May 1901.

    Another suggeston is the anniversary of the date Australia became a federation: 1st January 1901. But noone wants to celebration two public holidays on the same date! That's a waste of a public holiday. :)
