I've been fascinated by the concept of transgenerational trauma for a while now, it's something I first heard of after my mother explained to me why they felt so strongly about the effects of far-right extremism and persecution of marginalized people. Multiple people in her family had resisted the Nazi occupation during WW2, with some of them ending up in front of a firing squad. The death of an uncle had been such a traumatic experience for her own mother that, even though she had never met this uncle, the story her mother told was permanently fixed in her mind. It amazed me how somebody could have such a strong image of something she could not possibly have lived through, and how much that would inform her own views.
