What I think is slightly more interesting about this is the assumption that people are expected to look up only to people of the same gender as them. Can't men look up perfectly well to women as role models? One of my greatest heroes as a young person was Eskarina Smith from Equal Rites. Because she did what the fuck she wanted regardless of what people told her to do (or not do). I recently watched an utterly dire TV show called Another Life in which the only remotely tolerable character was non-binary and I was quite happy relating to them.
It's slightly weirder when you're talking about a near-immortal alien who isn't even human so technically is neither man nor woman anyway.
Note this is not the same thing as making sure gender representation in media is, well, representative. Because that does matter.
