Tildes Video Thread

So, quite a few people don't like/watch video content, and don't like seeing the homepage filled with videos. Let's try something new, see if it sticks.

What are the best videos you have watched this past week/fortnight?

    • How Feudalism Finally Ended In 2008
      • Interesting video about a Channel Island that clung to Feudalism until 2008
    • Hell March - Frank Flepacki & The Tiberian Sons
      • We were talking about fallen game dev studios at work yesterday and Westwood came up. I had to give Hellmarch a listen, of course.
    • V-Lite: Disposable Lightweight VHS Tape
      • Interesting video about "disposable"/cheap VHS tapes that showed up too late to be useful
    • SCSI, usb of the 80s
      • Really great breakdown of SCSI, which is a standard I didn't have much experience with. By the time I got into building computers, USB was already king, so I was glad to get a history lesson on one of its predecessors.
    • Why Nobody Lives In Venice
      • A really insightful look at how Venice is more than the canal part we all know, the troubles the locals face, and some history
    • Why Bluey's "Sleepytime" is One of the Best Episodes of Television
      • Bluey has been a big part of my life since become a parent. It's one of those kids shows that's really educational for parents and kids alike. If I had to pick an animated idol to look up to as a father, it would probably be Bandit. But beyond all that, the show has a lot of really beautiful moments that capture what being a child or a parent is like. And this episode in particular is one of the best.

If this is the right place for it, I was wondering if any can recommend channels - I find myself more likely to put on easy-going, digestible videos that you wouldn't necessarily share in the thread like this (this works better for explainers or video essays), but do good-work across many videos.

A few channels I enjoy are

    Foresty Forest
    J. Kenji López-Alt
    Tokyo Llama

I feel like the subject matter could be anything as long as the editing isn't too distracting - something low-key where it feels like you're checking in on the latest that they've been up to, rather than something overly prepared/presented.

YouTube algo prefers suggesting content with similar subject matters and high engagement, rather than something of a similar tone.

I don't watch a lot of filmmaking or movie analysis content on YouTube. The last one I enjoyed was Lessons from the Screenplay before they moved on to more lucrative platforms.

In a different vein, one with slightly more irreverence sprinkled liberally, is Paul E.T. I've learnt how film cameras can disappear with this video and about focus pullers in this video.

Plus, we both agree that child actors are the worst.
