Also accidentally stumbled upon a 10-year-old video from The Onion: The Onion's Future News From The Year 2137. Truly bizarre stuff.

Easily my favorite youtuber of all time. Shame that he only produces maybe a video a year now. Incredibly well-read and hilarious.

Why was the USA the first to deal with the Barbary Pirates? YouTube – History Matters – 4th August 2023

Why was the USA the first to deal with the Barbary Pirates?

The Barbary Pirates harassed shipping across the Mediterranean for centuries and in spite of this, it wasn't a European power who struck the first blow against them. It was the Americans in the early 19th century who started their downfall after fighting two wars against them. To find out why it was the Americans that did this instead of the French, the Spanish or the British watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Casey Neistat's daily vlogs (specifically from 2015-2016) was probably one of my favorite periods on YouTube. YouTube was no stranger to the vlog format, but it felt like Casey both:

    • Elevated it. He put in so much work into his shots and editing, something I didn't fully appreciate until I watched a video essay pointing it out.. There's a clear delineation in Vlogs on YouTube pre and post Casey, since the quality of his videos very quickly challenged others to do the same.
    • Used the medium to tell interesting stories. The vlogs were a window into the really interesting life Casey had outside the platform. I appreciated seeing him try to build a business in Beme, interact with the friends that would come in and out of the vlogs, and maintain relationships with his family, especially his son who went to college around the time I did.

Life of Riza feels like they're picking up the torch from 2016 Neistat.

be the main character of your own life is the first video in a series of vlogs documenting their 20s, that they started earlier this year.

They don't make daily vlogs; they post sporadically. The lower frequency lets them pour so much more effort into their videos, and it shows. The camera work is insane, and they pair it with great editing.

The quality of the editing and camera work contrasts pretty starkly against the mundanity(?) of the content. They don't go skating on a boosted board, in the middle of traffic, without a helmet like Casey. They do regular person things. But maybe it's the fact that I feel like I can relate as someone also in their 20s, I thoroughly enjoy watching.
