The Making of The Fugitive was a Sh*t Show

Chasing Harrison Ford without a script is hard. Let’s talk about how difficult it was to make The Fugitive, from nearly every actor making up all their lines to VFX artists barred from talking about their effects work.

I got curious about Fred MacMurray after rewatching his outstanding performance as the insurance salesman Walter Neff on the quintessential noir Double Indemnity (1944). This video is a bit stuffy and largely biographical, but it also goes through his roles.

MacMurray, it turns out, was a notorious leading man -- he played good guys. I really thought he was a professional villain or anti-hero, but back then stardom was reserved for virtuous characters. That's a shame, as he was the perfect noir protagonist, skillfully alternating between love and distrust, malice and innocence. I can't recommend Double Indemnity enough.

I will probably watch some of MacMurray's comedic performances. Apparently, that is another of his strong suits. He starred in the original Flubber movie, The Absent Minded Professor, in 1961, and was also in The Apartment, with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

According to IMDB, Fred MacMurray "was likely the most underrated actor of his generation". That is quite the statement, but, right now, it sounds plausible to me.
