There are lots of videos by YouTubers about my hometown of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. I just watched this video by Anthony Bourdain, and I think he was the first to kinda get some of our culture. Of course, Salvador is a large metropolis, and they only show a selection of contexts that fit Bourdain's show and persona. So exclusively tourist spots. Nevertheless, he still shows valuable insight, particularly on the large influence of African culture.

Bourdain seems to think we are very sensual people always down to fuck, which is funny. I don't think we are more sensual than the rest of the country. Bourdain is simply misreading our body language. He is also clearly hanging around a lot in places that are heavily sexualized, like the beach, bars, Pelourinho, parties, etc. So for him to say that Salvador is hypersexual would be like me saying that the US is hypersexual based on my experiences in Mardi Gras. But that's okay, I am not one to problematize.

It's funny how someone watching the episode would think Salvador is all some kind of mythical repository of primeval roots, when in reality we are largely a regular Brazilian concrete jungle with lots of cars, roads, and buildings. We have entire boroughs with no access to the beach. When this first aired our subway had just started operating! I get why none of that is remotely interesting though.

I also know and worked with one of his tour guides, which is fun.

The Making of The Fugitive was a Sh*t Show

Chasing Harrison Ford without a script is hard. Let’s talk about how difficult it was to make The Fugitive, from nearly every actor making up all their lines to VFX artists barred from talking about their effects work.

Well that’s one fucking way to animate a horror story about a rogue sentient AI. That was definitely an experience.

I got curious about Fred MacMurray after rewatching his outstanding performance as the insurance salesman Walter Neff on the quintessential noir Double Indemnity (1944). This video is a bit stuffy and largely biographical, but it also goes through his roles.

MacMurray, it turns out, was a notorious leading man -- he played good guys. I really thought he was a professional villain or anti-hero, but back then stardom was reserved for virtuous characters. That's a shame, as he was the perfect noir protagonist, skillfully alternating between love and distrust, malice and innocence. I can't recommend Double Indemnity enough.

I will probably watch some of MacMurray's comedic performances. Apparently, that is another of his strong suits. He starred in the original Flubber movie, The Absent Minded Professor, in 1961, and was also in The Apartment, with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

According to IMDB, Fred MacMurray "was likely the most underrated actor of his generation". That is quite the statement, but, right now, it sounds plausible to me.

Okay, that is clearly no "hip", I'm just excited to see the full body of work of some cast members I like.

Drew Gooden - Everybody wants to waste your time.

I thought this video would be semi-ironic, given the runtime, but was surprisingly captivated. I'm not sure he covers any new ground here, but the passion and clarity behind what is effectively a 30 minute rant was lovely to see.
