Tildes Video Thread
Find yourself watching tons of great videos on [insert chosen video sharing platform], but also find yourself reluctant to flood the Tildes front page with them? Then this thread is for you.
It could be one quirky video that you feel deserves some eyeballs on it, or perhaps you've got a curated list of videos that you'd love to talk us through...
Share some of the best video content you've watched this past week/fortnight with us!
So I’ve been watching a lot of Qauntum Tech videos on YouTube. It’s soothing and I also learn a bit via the informative text. Are these videos legit or are we in the jungle-boys fake video territory does anyone know? Anyways I like how many different subjects they take on and they’re well made.
Presuming this is the same company behind the channel, there is a decent amount of info on their site:
https://www.quantumtechhd.com/#about
So they're basically professional marketers that give "exposure" to the other content creators they supposedly convince to let them remix the content of, before submitting it to their own Quantum Tech channel. But I guess you should ask yourself, how often have you watched one of the Quantum Tech videos and then actually subscribed to the original creator's channel? If never or only super rarely, which I suspect is true of most people who watch such videos, then I think that says a lot about the value of Quantum Tech and the "exposure" they're claiming to give to the original creators of that content.
p.s. Whenever I see the word "exposure" being mentioned rather than actual payment for use of someone else's creative work, my bullshit alarm immediately starts blaring. See: F*ck You, Pay Me for why. ;)
Thanks, yeah I’ve read the bio but I appreciate the insight. I get your point but I don’t subscribe to anything. I guess they make content for me then and that could probably hurt the original creators financially. It’s a fine line between getting more “exposure” and being taken advantage of. If it weren’t for them I would never have seen the content but then again it shields potential subscribers.
A few videos I think are worth sharing here.
I recently got introduced to a fun little travel vlog channel made by fellow Tildes user @ali and his partner, and their latest two videos were pretty dang cool, IMO:
This Cozy Hidden Festival is Changing Tourism in Thailand (and the World?!)
Kayaking with Swimming Monkeys?! We Did Not Expect THIS of Thailand’s Community-Based Tourism
And another similar-ish (in terms of the super chill vibe) channel that I've also been loving, made by two Canadians now living in a Japanese akiya (formerly abandoned) house and doing some vlogs about their life in Japan, and the process of renovating the house:
Our last-minute akiya renovations before the winter snow in the Japanese countryside
We started insulating the main part of our century-old Japanese house
We FINALLY Finished This Part! (Japanese House Renovation & Monkeys)
Thank you for sharing the videos :D
Our titles are often still work in progress since these newest 2 videos underperformed a bit - we were in a new place and YouTube is I think still finding the audience.
Especially the video about the festival was great. My girlfriend puts a lot of effort into the videos and researching the topics. She used to be a social scientist so she cares a lot about the factuality. The festival itself was actually one of the things I enjoyed the most in Thailand. Lots of places here have been super busy and everyone wants to see the same few things. The nature is beautiful but the experience around it feels a bit too “easy” or just “sterile” in a way.
That festival really gave us some insights into Thai life on that island. The dance in the end was absolutely mesmerizing. We’ve asked the song owner for permission to share it in the video, so I hope they’ll get back to us eventually because the song was about the sea people of koh lanta as well. Just overall amazing.
And when I rewatched the kayaking i had to laugh a lot because Marola filmed most of it, I was always seen paddling. It just looked like Marola was sitting there getting transported around while talking about the mangroves :D
I am still a bit camera shy too when it comes to speaking directly into the camera/
Little bit behind the scenes rambling haha
It sucks that you even have to worry about crafting titles and thumbnails to draw the views like that, but YouTube is what it is, sadly. :( Regardless of their performance, I really enjoyed those two latest vids though. It was cool to see such a small local festival like that, and learn about the community-based tourism initiative (which is an awesome idea!). I loved seeing the monkeys too; So cute! And LOL yeah, it definitely looked like you were doing all the work when it came to the rowing. :P
p.s. You have no reason to be shy on camera, BTW. You two are both great. :)
I appreciate you saying that! It sometimes gets a bit disheartening putting so much effort into a video and then a bad thumbnail basically takes all momentum away. But it’s part of the game.
Funny enough there’s other videos where a title change suddenly revived an old video - one video we made about Okinawa had a room tour, and when we put that in the title, all of a sudden the click rate went up from 3% to 10%
Yeah, that's why I try not to get too mad at over-the-top thumbnails and clickbait titles on YouTube, as long as they're not totally misleading. I tightly manage my subscriptions and use notifications to let me know when new videos by creators I like get released... but I know that 99% of traffic doesn't arrive to videos that way. So it's totally understandable that YouTubers who put a ton of effort into their videos (like you two do) have to play the enticement game with the algorithm and general YouTube audience in order to make all that effort worth it for themselves. And as long as the quality videos keep coming, I can look past some slightly annoying thumbnails and titles. ;)
