Meanwhile, Russian leaders are warning NATO that admitting Georgia could spark a "terrible conflict."

    Munich Agreement

Basically, Germany told France and England, that if they let Germany conquer part of Czechoslovakia (ally of France and England), they will stop with their invasion of neighboring countries and will not fight with them. (oversimplifying)

Is it just me, or is Russia doing the same thing with Georgia (and maybe even previously with Crimea)?

I think the word for this type of deal where two not-necessarily related topics are negotiated (ex: we will stop propping communist dictatorships in other countries if you will accept our arms control agreements) is Linkage, and a tactic the Russians love to use. This is a terrible practice in my mind because the more they commit actions we disagree with, the more negotiating power they have. If they have nothing else to bargain with, just commit a few more atrocities and blame it on the US until they give.

There is a Large part of that story that did not play out in the public

I am also really curious about it from a geopolitical perspective. There is something that happened at the top level that is missing.

I remember reading something about Russia needing Ukraine for the farmland, it's a bread-basket like the american midwest. Most of their UK-bound oil/gas pipelines go through the Ukraine. I keep seeing this quote floating around: "Russia without Ukraine is a country; Russia with Ukraine is an empire."
