Each time I see a story like this, I wonder. Who in their right mind would throw their weight behind this absurd man? It is deeply disturbing to me that Trump has a 40% approval rating on FiveThirtyEight; everything about how he's handled this crisis has been exceedingly poor, and I fail to grasp how someone can justify their support for this person.

Anyone who can enlighten me, please do.

The link @Kuromantis provided helps a lot. From my outward view into the U.S., all I can see is a deeply-divided, highly-partisan country marred by one-upsmanship and individual entitlement, interwoven with a dearth of credible, factual news in a sea of noise, misinformation, and outright lies; intensified by a lack of proper civic education and incredible wealth inequality that prevents upward educational, financial, and social mobility.

The 40% of people who approve of Donald J. Trump either have one of, or a combination of, the following traits:

      1. A significant vested interest to ensure a Republican businessman is president (wealthy, with close ties, or run businesses themselves).
      2. Want to "own the libs"—it sounds ridiculous, but the extreme growing partisan divide has in some cases devolved into points scoring. It's not about winning, it's about the other "team" losing. It's about the other "team" not getting what they want, even if it disadvantages both sides.
      3. Buy into the fear, uncertainty, and doubt propagated by right-wing news outlets amongst the older folk, and internet eco chambers amongst the younger folk—that seek to divide and sow discord, instead of unite and elate. These platforms turn people against each other based on wedge issues.
      4. A begrudging support for DJT, because while he's "not great", the other side is "worse".

Any reasonable conservatives would have, or already have, jumped ship years ago. Remember, the Republican Party was once the party that instituted the EPA and enshrined in law the protection for National Parks—taking the "conservation" of "conservative" literally.

The scary part that worries many non-Americans is the seeping influence of extreme distrust amongst political sides and dirty politics into our own political systems. We don't want American-style political tactics applied in our own countries.

I once wanted to move and live in the United States. Unfortunately, I no longer do. Some of the reasons listed above are why.

Everything @emdash said, plus some variation of the "sunk-cost fallacy" ... After voting for him, it becomes much harder to stop supporting him, no matter what he does, because that would mean you...

Everything @emdash said, plus some variation of the "sunk-cost fallacy" ... After voting for him, it becomes much harder to stop supporting him, no matter what he does, because that would mean you were wrong. And more than almost anything else, we humans hate to be wrong.
