Surely this is proof that the attitudes of the extremely online are not representative of whether Avatar has had a cultural impact or not. It clearly has among the general audience.

There are a lot of big numbers here, but they all seem to be global. And divided by 50, not that big. I remember seeing the original twice, but also that the second time was completely lackluster....

I remember seeing the original twice, but also that the second time was completely lackluster. Do audiences really have any interest n this? I know I don't. I can't even remember what it's about at this point other than some white dudes infiltrating a native culture.

I missed the chance to see it in 3D in the theater. Thanks to this post actually, I think I'm going to go see it. You mention "the original", to be clear this is a remaster of the original and Avatar 2 hasn't come out yet.

The movie was forgettable. The plot is predictable. The themes in the movie are all rehashes of themes from other movies. The Smurfs. Fern Gully. Dances with Wolves. Basically every movie or story that touches on imperialism and conquest. In essence the whole story aspect of the movie is a distilled version of other stories shoehorned in to support the spectacle of the visuals. In 3D.

This is one of the only movies that ever made effective use of 3D, over the entire course of the 3D movie fad, and it's worth watching the movie to see the spectacle of the environment they've created. I for one think this rerelease is worth eating the gram of shrooms and paying the twenty bucks to see this movie the way it was meant to be shown, possibly for the last time ever.

For something that’s just a re-release of a movie from 13 years ago it’s pretty good. Especially considering it beat the new release of the weekend that was highly marketed (Don’t Worry Darling)....

Yeah. The movie’s been around for a long time and people went to go see it in theaters for that experience. The sequel is setting up to make a ton of money, probably two billion if not close to it.
