So I watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in theaters as it’s been re-released (probably due to EEAAO). I’d never seen it before but I’m a big fan of Ang Lee’s other two major movies Sense and Sensibility and Brokeback Mountain.

All three of these movies are 5/5s for me. CTHD is a beautiful looking movie with a lot of fun action sequences. There’s a sophistication and elegance to it that makes it nutritional fun.

I also saw Force Majeure from Ruben Ostlund who recently got triple nominated for Triangle of Sadness. Triangle is the only movie I had seen from him (and I’m planning on watching The Square soon), and I wanted to see his other stuff. I have a friend who describes him as euro Adam McKay, or rather McKay for people that think they’re above McKay. I didn’t love this, but I didn’t hate it. I do find Ostlund’s style to be interesting and I actually think he’s a really good visual director. But his scenes tend to go on for too long and end up being kind of dull.

I prefer McKay. I think, outside of Vice, McKay makes movies aimed at working class people in a way that Ostlund makes them for more boujee people (which is why he’s a staple at Cannes). If I had to expand further it would be that McKay’s movies are much more entertaining and loud. Ostlund’s films tend to be quieter and slower. But they both tackle the same subjects in a satirical manner and they both are incredibly obvious about it. Don’t Look Up is just more fun than Triangle though.

Edit: Saw The Square, it sucked. It’s Ostlund’s worst movie. So incredibly boring.
