Midweek Movie Free Talk
Have you watched any movies recently you want to discuss? Any films you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
I saw Air last night at an advance screening. I've been to many advance screenings over the years, they usually happen a week or two before the official release (with as early as two months before release). They're not test screenings, they're final edits. I don't know what the studio gets out of them, but they ask us to tell some of the people running it how we felt. Maybe it's a way to get a feel for word of mouth right before release. This was an interesting situation where the advance screening was the day before release. Don't know, but a free movie is a free movie.
Air is great. It harkens back to the studio films that came out of the 90s. It's also a lot funnier than I thought it was going to be. It's a classic crowd-pleaser in the sense that Green Book was a crowd-pleaser (which is probably the only classic type of crowd-pleaser to win Best Picture in the past decade). I can see why this is getting Oscar buzz (though it's success in that regard is entirely up to whether it even breaks even at the box office), it's a movie that you don't see anymore and that could hit a chord with some of the older members of the Academy. It's a good time, nothing special, but it's an entertaining way to spend two hours.
