Midweek Movie Free Talk
Have you watched any movies recently you want to discuss? Any films you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Saw The Little Mermaid, it was alright. I’m a fan of Rob Marshall, especially his Disney films, but this was definitely the weakest of the three. It’s a beautiful looking movie, and it’s fun but there were some issues with the music. None of the new songs are good, and one of them is downright awful. I also don’t like that they took out the best verse from Poor Unfortunate Souls (and don’t underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE). But overall: good. I’d put it on the same level as Aladdin. Aladdin did better with the music and this did better with the visuals.
I made a conscious decision not to watch Fast X even if my people are the ones going out to watch it. I’ve never seen a Fast and Furious movie in theaters (Hobbs and Shaw doesn’t count imo) and I’m not starting now.
I saw Polite Society and it was a trip. I don't want to spoil the movie, but it was goofy, fun, weird. It's worth watching with minimal spoilers if the trailers pique your interest.
Gonna do a bit of an indie movie round-up:
Showing Up
From Kelly Reichardt, director of First Cow and Meek's Cutoff. She's a filmmaker that is heavily influenced by Chantal Ackerman and specifically Jeanne Dielman in that not a lot happens in her movies. There's often long shots of characters doing menial everyday life things.
It was good. It was like an ASMR session where you can see and hear artists creating art. You can hear a paint brush touch porcelain and it's all very relaxing. The stakes remain low the entire time. I won't lie, most of you are going to find this boring, but I thought it was surprisingly engaging. I'm not a fan of these types of movies, but there was something about this that I was attracted to. Probably the setting, I quite like art teachers and the way they dress and talk.
You Hurt My Feelings
From Nicole Holofcener, who wrote and directed Enough Said and also co-wrote The Last Duel. This is the type of movie that's more up my alley.
This is probably Holofcener's best film. It's like a Woody Allen movie set in the modern world, with a more modern style. It's so funny, and it can be very touching, and it deals with the existential realities of life like a lot of Woody's films do. Julia Louis Dreyfus gives a fantastic performance. Also a very low stakes film but it feels more like a movie-movie than Showing Up.
It's one of my favorites of the year so far. I highly recommend it.
