[...] What we're going to do here today is talk about how to interpret these aspects of a movie: the story, the shots and editing, and how it's all put together, to understand how it works, and what it all means.
Now this kind of analysis doesn't just apply to cinema. We're really talking about analyzing works of art, and narrative art like cinema warrants the same level of serious analysis as paintings hanging in the Louvre. And folks, I am not only talking about fancy art films by Bela Tarr or Rayasuke Hamaguchi, we can apply this same level of analysis to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or M3gan.
And once we're done here, you can be that insufferable pretentious person at a party who tells everyone what movies are "really about" - how Lord of the Rings is actually about addiction, how Top Gun is about struggling to figure out one's sexuality, and how every Christopher Nolan movie is really about how he misses his family (I mean that last one I actually do believe).
