I just watched the Three Musketeers and... well, I'm disappointed. Aside from the fact that the movie doesn't respect key elements of the book (main one so far is the secret identity of Athos), the characters are everything but noble. And that nobility is central in the plot, in which it defines what decisions the characters make until the end. Also, what the hell is going on with the soundtrack, it sounds like the Dark Knight's OST!

Two of the films I watched this week that are worth recommending are To Live and Die in L.A. and High Plains Drifter.

The first being a William Friedkin film from 1985 that's scored by Wang Chung and shot by Robby Müller. An incredibly visceral 80s action cop film that doesn't turn out how you might think. Every shot has that gorgeous Müller aesthetic which I can never get enough of. The car chase sequence to me is arguably better than that in The French Connection. The whole film goes so damn hard. Truly a peak 80s film if there ever was one.

The other is Clint Eastwood's first attempt at directing a western in 1973. While it has heavy spaghetti western influence, the whole thing was shot on location around Mono Lake, California which gives it a unique landscape for the genre. It's a dark, grim take on a western even for the revisionist trend of the time. I didn't expect it to be so morally ambiguous, but as an audience you're left with a lot of questions by the end. One of my favorite westerns now that I've seen it.

I just watched The Night is Short, Walk on Girl for the first time and it was absolutely delightful! It's a Japanese animed movie with a really unique art style I haven't seen on screen before, not your typical modern anime style. Very fun character designs, makes the most of animation with vibrant colors and great movement. Plot is the kind of thing you just got to let yourself get swept up in, fantastical and silly but very endearing at the core. If you're looking for something sincere, uplifting, pretty funny, and a bit surreal, this is an excellent pick!

I don't really watch anime any more but that movie and The Tatami Galaxy which has the same director and art style are some of my favorites.
