Now that I watched Zone of Interest (and did some rewatching). Here's my top 10 of 2023:

    1. Oppenheimer
    2. Killers of the Flower Moon
    3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
    4. Knock at the Cabin
    5. Poor Things
    6. Past Lives
    7. May December
    8. The Holdovers
    9. The Zone of Interest
    10. Ferrari

I did a rewatch of both Maestro and Ferrari since they were teetering back and forth for me. I actually ended up liking Maestro less. I think Maestro has really strong moments, but a lot of the in between can be kind of dull. Outside of the beautiful cinematography I think I'm kind of disappointed in Cooper's follow-up. A real change of tone from my first watch of it.

I already really liked Ferrari when I watched it in theaters. Thought it was awesome. But the re-watch really cemented it in my top 10. What can I say, I like technically proficient melodrama.

Also, honorable mentions: Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Coup de Chance, You Hurt My Feelings, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Besides the two movies for the Tildes movie club, it has been a varied week with mostly good movies.

I rewatched Sergio Corbucci's Django which still stands as one of the most violent and grim spaghetti westerns. Unlike Leone's films, Corbucci has basically no humorous elements. Just sadistic violence from start to finish.

Equally violent, but in a much more depressing realistic manner was City of God. Seeing children under the age of 10 being forced to murder another child is definitely high on the list of very uncomfortable movie scenes.

Somehow I continued the depressive streak with Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves. Absolute stellar performance by Emily Watson with her depiction of the naive women obsessively in love, and just full of good intentions and a strong faith, that sadly leads her to extreme self destructive behavior.

I had more fun with the classic 50's sci-fi Forbidden Planet which heavily inspired Star Trek with its colorful aesthetics and cool set pieces, with a rather philosophical serious story that can rival the best of Star Trek episodes.

I also got around to catching up on some Hitchcock with Rear Window and Rope, both clear showcases of why Hitchcock is the master of suspense and being in complete control of his sets and production.
