I’ve written about X and Pearl before. I grew to like those films more as time went on.
But, I gotta say, I thought this was bad. I don’t see myself growing to like this. On a technical level, yes, Ti West is strutting his stuff. It’s impressive. But, the film drags. A lot. There’s no tension in anything. Maxine went from an interesting part of a larger ensemble in X, to not being very interesting under the spotlight. The story line is convoluted, with terrible tin-eared dialogue and half-baked themes.
X and Pearl worked in large part because they were simple. With all the bells and whistles here it just feels exhausting.
